Starting around the turn of the century as we expanded across the United States, survey markers were often placed in the ground as part of the geological mapping efforts. The most common geodetic survey marks are cast metal disks with stamped legends on their face set in rock ledges. These marks are intended to be permanent, and disturbing them is generally prohibited by federal and state law. About 1960, the USC&GS created a cartoon character “Marvin Marker” to help preserve survey marks. Read more….
